The water that enters your home from the main water supply line should only flow in one direction and that is into your home. There are times that the water can flow backwards into the main water supply line, mostly caused by pressure changes in the pipes. Backflow preventers stop this from happening.

Backflow can happen when the main water line breaks or a fire hydrant is being used. Pressure is lost during these instances and water is no longer being pushed forward into your home causing it to flow backwards into the city water lines. This can cause the public drinking supply to become contaminated. This is one of many reasons why a working backflow preventer is needed for your business or home.
